Lessons of a Young Design Entrepreneur
Jumping head first with no work experience into today's working environment as a millennial can be scary. I for one was unprepared for what was to come, but eager to learn. The biggest thing about the starting process, after 13 years of schooling, you don't actually quite know where to start, and how to start. Certain things such as invoicing, appropriate work attire, tax and many more, are not taught to you in school, and you are left to navigate these unknown waters alone.
Today's working environment has been shaped by several factors, including technological advancements, changing demographics, and evolving social attitudes. These factors have had a significant influence on the different generations of workers in the modern workforce.
One significant generational influence in today's working environment is the presence of millennials and Gen Z in the workforce. Being a younger generation we have grown up with technology and are highly proficient in using it. As a result, we have had a significant impact on the way work is done, including the increased use of remote work, flexible schedules, and digital communication tools. One of the biggest experiences i have revolves around my working schedule, unlike the older generations, i can work at the most random hours in the day, whether i start my work for a specific client in the middle of the day, or start my working day at the end of a traditional working day, i still manage to have the typical output and expectation required.
Another generational influence is the changing attitudes towards work-life balance. Us younger generations prioritise work-life balance more than previous generations and expect their employers to provide them with opportunities for work-life balance. This has resulted in the emergence of policies such as flexible work schedules, remote work, and unlimited time off. In other words, as long as I can produce the work as expected, I should be allowed to do what I want when I want, without impacting the quality of my work.
Being a big part of the younger generation and Gen Z, I am excited to see where the work environment will go from here and how it will progress over time as more and more Gen Z workers influence the older generations.
